Thankyou very much for your support, folks!!!!. Just a reminder, if you pay by Paypal or Credit Card 4-5% of your contribution goes out as transaction fees. So Check is the best payment method, especially when you're contributing more than $100.
    ------------------------------------------
Personal Check in Mail: You can send us a physical check. Since there is no transaction fee involved, this is our most preferred method. Most banks now provide a feature called BillPay by which you can send a check to anyone directly from your Bank's website free of cost. Make the checks payable to Immigration Voice and send it to the following address.

    Immigration Voice
    PO Box 114
    Dayton, NJ - 08810

I just PayPaled $300 yesterday. Please, keep all of us PBEC and DOL victims in mind as well. We need your help!!

If all members of this community pay 100 grand , we can buy a country in africa and build our own country!!
This could be good substitute for buying houses here worth 500-1000k$

    What do u think!?:D

I understand this is supposed to be a humorous note but I found it offensive. All countries in Africa are sovereign and they officially cannot be bought.
I am not aware of any island in Africa that could be up for sale.

There is no big secret, except little bit of planning and starting something.
I came here in 1997(at 22), but was in school for 2 years, started working in 1999. As soon as I started, I put money in 401k. I married early in 2000(I was only 25 then), my wife already did her M.S by then, she started working in 2000 even before our marriage. I made her put into her 401k(max out most of the time), we also put into esop. Together we have 300k in investment assests in 401k. Then I started a brokerage account and put 1500 every month, that accumualted to 150k now.
I brought house early, as soon as I am out of PT, with in first year of H-1, it didn't appreciate much but I still have an equity of 200k in primary house(I took 15 year mortgage) and I brought another house, that I rent out which as an equity of 50k. I have some cash. I brought couple of plots in india and also constructing an house in my native town in India.
But i want to do something else, I am happy with my life, for last two years, I got into golf, tennis and exercise, trying to be physically fit. I used to worry about GC before, not any more, whatever happens will happen.
Except that I am not progressing ahead in my carreer, I want to do MBA and get into something else. Right now most of my money goes to day care for two of my kids around 24,000.
More than money, you have to develop right habits, be healthy and have positive attitude.
In my case, Secrets of my lifestyle are
    1. Getting started early, buying an house at 26. STarting 401k early.
    2. Marrying a girl, who is already working.
    3. Maxing my 401k and esop plan.

Your planning and strategy was really good . I bought a home in 2002.Do you think buying a second home in this market is a good idea ? Can we cover up the mortgage with the rent ? What is your experience with this ?

    Thanks Reddy..

Please! do let me know if you find any insurance company offering a million dollar whole life insurance for $100 a month!!:eek::eek:

As someone said, you really need good luck finding one!

I never said whole life, term could cost around $100/m if your health is reasonably good at 60's not for heart disease or kidney transplant patience.

If you are not aware you could pass on your term life insurance proceedings to your heir

one of my family member have whole life for $81/month for $1m at the age of 28 in NJ, in this plan we will get back everything we paid after 30 years.

This is exactly what I'm trying to point out. As a non-Indian, what the hell this subject got to do with immigration in America and getting a green card. This is about politics in India.

But then why do you care to monitor this thread so often? I guess there are hundred other threads that talk about immigration.

    Dear Members,

We have worked hard in the last 4 years and have made some progress along the way Immigration Voice Achievements (http://immigrationvoice.org/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=5&Itemid=47) But Most of us are still in the limbo of green card process and waiting in different stages. Some of us may have advanced to the I-485 stage and have a little more career flexibility but the hanging sword of uncertainty still looms over our heads.

    Our angst, our insecurity:

Even with EAD and other options, lack of green card is lack of security and lack of certainty. You know it and you feel it every day. In order to find a permanent fix for the uncertainty, angst and insecurity and in order to snap out of the probationary lifestyle and career, we have to finish what we started over 4 years ago -- get the U.S. Congress to act on this problem and solve it once and for all.

    Early effort wins:

The first agenda of next Congress will be immigration and we expect an immigration bill to be debated sometime in early 2011. However, it would be a big mistake to wait until that time to do something about that bill. Successful advocacy efforts are the ones that start early and introduce concepts and ideas into the debate before the legislators write their first draft. Once the committee hearings and debates begin, it is harder to get changes or fixes into a bill because it requires an amendment to the bill in a politically charged and heated atmosphere. Groups and organizations that wait until the last minute to influence members of congress often fail to achieve results. In order to succeed in next year's immigration bill, we have to begin talking to members of congress now. Remember, the advocacy efforts we did with lobby day and rally in Sept 2007 influenced congress to include our provisions in bipartisan bills introduced in Aug 2008. Legislative things take time.

    How you can help:

You and help in two different ways:

Join the advocacy effort in DC on June 7th and 8th. (http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/forum85-action-items-for-everyone/1437978-iv-announcement-advocacy-days-in-washington-dc-7th-and-8th-june.html) If you have never done this before, we encourage you to help us with this and join us. Immigration voice will arrange the logistics of setting up meetings and arranging the material for you to take to your Congressmen and Senators. We are expecting about 150 immigration voice members to gather in DC and participate in over 200 meetings with Congressmen and Senators.

Contributing Funds to help finance the effort (http://immigrationvoice.org/forum/forum85-action-items-for-everyone/1534974-funding-drive-iv-needs-your-support-for-advocacy-events-in-dc.html). You are most welcome to come to DC and join us but if your job demands are such that you cannot take two days off on June 7th and 8th, then you can still contribute to this effort by contributing financially to Immigration Voice. Many expenses tied to the travel of grassroots members from distant states is being expensed by Immigration Voice. So kindly contribute funds to this effort by clicking on this link. You have an obligation to yourself and your family to plant your career in this country once and for all. EAD and AP, if you have them, are not going to cut it. We are not there yet. And we have to finish together what we started together.

    Thank you.

    i was thinking...

500000 legal immigrants, even if u assume 4 per family , ONLY 125000 houses can be sold...(even if 50% qualify for a loan.. thats just 62500 houses sold.. last i read..there were millions of homes for sale)
if the average cost of the house is 250000, thats additional 31.25 Billion $ in credit borrowing... where is the money?

I agree with you that this is not big enough to stop the entire crisis. But look at the cities where there are lot of immigrants. I can give you one example where it could make huge impact.
Seattle (King County) home of Microsoft has a housing inventory of 8600 single family homes around 1200 condos. It takes 10 months to clear up the inventory.
Microsoft applied around 2K new H1B last year. So my guess is it might have applied around 8k in last 4 years. Lets assume 60% of those didn't GC's. So around 5k people waiting in the line. Lets say out of which 4K didn't buy a house and are willing to buy a house. So 4K new buyers in a market which has 10K units. If every one buys house in next few months then the months of supply will become 6.
There lot of other companies located in this area which also apply for H1Bs.

So the point is immigrants can save or make big enough impact some housing markets.
Revival of housing market revives the economy. May be we should identify those markets and talk to those senators.

not a single person has explicity voted "No". In reality though, everyone who has viewed this thread (1563 views when I last checked - even if you assume each person has checked this thread at least 10 times, that's about 156 individuals out of whom only about 35 have voted so far!) and not bothered to vote is essentially voting "No"! However, again as you point out, I am not really looking for the "No"s since these people have clearly decided they don't want to part with their money at this stage (not ascribing any reasons or motives here - just stating the facts). .....Cheers

Its a wrong fallacy to assume that NOs = people who dont want to part with their money at this stage. Let me put it this way for you with an example :-

    Poll
    1. Yes I want e-bill to save tree.
    2. No I dont want ebill and I care a damn about the trees
    3. Dont Care

The above poll is a loaded poll favoring one option only. Is the only reason someone may not want ebill is that they dont care a damn about the trees. NOPE. It can be a lot of other reasons - they may feel not so good about internet security or may not be internet savvy. And of course, paper bills can be on recycled paper and whole lot of other arguments are not covered.

Similarly your poll is very much loaded.

And again, you havent defined "more". Currently, I believe the contribution limit is 25 dollars per month. When you say more - what number are you thinking of. And now look at the folks who said YES. What numbers are they looking at. If you had put in a number and said "are you willing to pay x dollars per month .." - then you can be assured of that the members who say YES are on the same page as you. Right now, what you have is a number of folks but they may not be on same page.

And what is the definition of "updates" ? We are not working here on a fixed time project where the deliverable is due at the end of period 'x'. For quite a lot of period, the updates will be generic and on the lines of "we are working on getting to our goals and we are making progress". You will not get any more details than this. Turn around and check with the folks who said YES -- is this what they are expecting. Or they are expecting something different.

25 dollars per month equates to 0.6 % of annual salary for someone making 50k and only 0.3% of someone making 100k. Is this a big amount - Yes and No. It clearly depends on the individual. For lobbying you agree that the amount required is way more than what we currently are able to raise.

IV has probably 25k+ registered users. This is a good number to look at. Practically, how many of them have logged in and used this system for the last six months and three months and last month. I dont know the exact number but have a strong feeling that this number will probably in the 10-15 percentile only. And guests is not equal to an unregistered IV member. Not every person posts on this site. There are a lot of people who just browse the forums and dont post - they dont need to login everytime they come on to this site - therefore you will see a good chunk of visitors but they necessarily are not unregistered members.

Your intentions are good - but the approach you took needs to be refined further. None of what I wrote above is personally against you - I appreciate your efforts but feel that we need to approach it differently - probably equating updates with money is not a good approach given that once someone gives money , they may start having a feeling of entitlement and we may not be ready to handle it.

I have to agree. One has to be extra careful in such matters as it is a tendency of the "majority" to always point fingers at the "minorities" by generalization. What some may think of as advice in a shoplifting case could be very easily misinterpreted as "support" in the eyes of the antis.

Moreover, the OP has not once been apologetic to his actions rather he is trying to rationalize his actions by accusing everyone of stealing office supplies.

I have stayed away from answering to his post as you can already see!

You are trying to defend a criminal and thus some people objected to it. Crimes by immigrants, whatever they maybe bring bad repute to their country and the immigrant community.

Agreed...it is personal decision...but for Indians...it is a difficult decision. The way India is growing....People who have lived here for more than 10years...are migrating back....i know a person who left...has warned me...just to earn and get out.....not good for kids future etc....

    So...we are all still learning.....

    ----
Agreed it's frustrating to go thru a roller-coaster ride as far as GC is concerned. I believe members of IV are leaving no stone unturned to tide over the GC hurdles by speaking in one voice and acting in unison.

Literally, we must have the 'staying power' to do this. If people wanna go back to their home country, it's their personal decision. Impatience and frustration should not be the driving factor for people to return to their home country.

You are suggesting how to avoid it rather then try to acknowledge that there is a problem in the wording of AP. By problem, I meant the whole dynamics has changes over the years, so, its time they change to reflect today's reality.

There may not be everyone who would continue to be on H1 while their AOS is pending.

In light of the AC21 provision, this is pretty common - people change jobs using EAD and are then on AOS. Looks like the wording on AP was ignored when AC21 was being made into law. This is now biting some of the travelers.

Could the AP wording be changed using an administrative fix by USCIS/DOS rather than a legislative update?

great work everyone. thank you nycgal and others that took initiative and pushed this effort further. committed members like all of you in this thread help us a lot by sending emails to reporters. several letters highlighting a particular issue generates interest in reporters and media orgs and they choose to write about us. It is not easy to get even a single article published in newspapers and it is due to the efforts of our members, we are able to generate awareness. There is still a long road ahead of us and I am sure with active participation from everyone, we will surely succeed.
